Free Wireless Hotspots

Being a budget traveler I prefer to get things for free when possible and one thing that’s fairly easy to come by are wifi hot spots.  Here’s a list of the ones I’ve found so far.

Mexico

Cancun

Mayan Hostel - The wifi works downstairs (usually) and occasionally you can get a very low signal up on the patio.

Merida

Nomadas Hostel - The wifi works in the lobby and dining area and you can occasionally get signal in the closer rooms/dorms.  The hostel is nice as well - try to get a lower bunk if you’re in the dorms.  The mattress is bigger.

Zocalo - Calle 60 x 61.  Quick to connect and a strong signal.  They even have plugs that you can use near most of the benches.

Park - Calle 59 x 60.  Takes a while to connect but there are two options with decent speed/signal.  There are plugs nearby but not as convenient as in the Zocalo.  But, it’s smaller and there are fewer people/salesmen/buskers so it’s easier to concentrate.  There are a few restaurants right on the square if you want to have a meal while surfing.

Panchos - Calle 59 x 60 y 62.  You’ll have to eat to use it, but the signal is very strong.  The food is good too though if you get anything besides Salbutes it can be expensive for dinner (@ 200 MXN for an entree).  I think they have a lunch menu that is a bit cheaper though.
